From its opening in 1956 until its redevelopment in 1998, it was Germany's largest stadium, known as the Zentralstadion. In 2010, the arena was leased by Red Bull GmbH, which led to its renaming.

The stadium is of historical significance, as it hosted five matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, making it the only stadium in the former GDR to have this honor. During European matches, the arena is known as the RB Arena in accordance with UEFA sponsorship rules.
