Description
The Volksparkstadion, located in the Bahrenfeld district in the west of Hamburg, is a prestigious UEFA category IV sports venue. With a capacity of 57,000 spectators for domestic matches and 51,500 for international matches, it is the home stadium of Hamburger SV. Opened on 30 April 1998, the stadium was built on the site of the old Stadt Arena and was designed by architect Gustav Elsner.
The stadium has had various names throughout its history, including the AOL Arena, HSH Nordbank Arena and Imtech Arena, but has often been referred to as the Hamburg Arena in European competitions. Until 2006, the Volksparkstadion was one of UEFA's elite five-star stadiums. In 2010, it hosted the first Europa League final.
In addition to football matches, the stadium regularly hosts high-level cultural and public events. In 2011, it hosted the world boxing title fight between Vladimir Klitschko and David Haye. Among the artists who have performed at the stadium are such names as Michael Jackson, Depeche Mode, Tina Turner and AC/DC.
