Description
Braga Municipal Stadium serves as the home arena of the local soccer club Braga. The stadium has a rich history, especially related to the 2004 European Football Championship, when it was chosen as one of the playing venues for the tournament. Two group stage matches were played here: Bulgaria vs Denmark (0:2) and Netherlands vs Latvia (3:0).
The stadium was specially built for the 2004 European Championship and its architect was Eduardo Sotu de Mora, a future Pritzker Prize winner. It cost over 83 million euros to build, making it one of the most expensive stadiums in Portugal. The stadium is unique in that it is located in a niche carved into a mountain cliff. The stadium seats about 30,000 spectators and has only two stands, the roofs of which are connected by parallel steel ropes, creating a visually unique architectural appearance.
