Stadio Diego Armando Maradona

Description

The Diego Armando Maradona Stadium (Italian: Stadio Diego Armando Maradona) is located in the city of Naples and is the home arena of Napoli soccer club. This stadium has a rich history, starting with its construction in 1959, when it was named "Stadio del Sole", which translates to "Stadium of the Sun".

In the early 1960s, the Stadio San Paolo, also named after the Apostle Paul, became the venue for several matches of the Olympic tournament. The stadium had a capacity of about 80,000 spectators. However, in 1989, before the World Cup, it underwent a renovation. In 1990, the stadium hosted World Cup games, including the semi-final between Italy and Argentina. The stadium has a capacity of 60240 seats, making it the third largest stadium in Italy, behind only the Giuseppe Meazza in Milan and the Olympic Stadium in Rome.

On November 26, 2020, the stadium received a new name and was named after legendary Napoli footballer Diego Armando Maradona, who passed away the same year. This decision was officially confirmed on December 4, 2020. Stadio Diego Armando Maradona now represents the legacy and contribution of this soccer icon to the history of Naples and world soccer.
