This stadium has witnessed historic events in the world of soccer. It hosted the replay of the European Champions Cup final in 1964, in which Sporting Clube Portugal defeated FC MTK Budapest. It also hosted the semi-final of the Euro 1972 championship between Belgium and West Germany, which was won by West Germany. "Bosuylstadion" was often used for international friendly matches involving the national teams of Belgium and the Netherlands.

However, after a friendly match between Germany and Brazil in 1988, the stadium stopped hosting international games. In 2017, a major reconstruction of the Bosuilstadion began, which will probably allow the stadium to retain its importance in the future.
